What is the effect of the wheel size on hoursepower/speed and acceleration?
Hi everyone,
First i want to tell you that i really dont understand much from cars or physics. I did some research just cos i am curious. I couldnt find the answer of my question. If you put 18 inch instead of 16 inch wheels, everyone says it gets heavier and cos of momentum it even weighs more than it weighs more. And they say aerodynamic drag might occur depending on your cars and wheels design. Weight center of wheel is important bla bla...
So my question is what if they weigh exactly same and there is no aerodynamic drag. 2 wheels one 16" other one is 18" and weighs exactly same.
As an example can anyone compare these two in approx. 110 hp honda civic assuming they weigh exactly same:
185/R70-13 6 feet, 3/8 inches
205/ZR40-17 6 feet, 2 1/8 inches

It's complicated... you can have a smaller wheel but larger tire and maintain the same overall diameter.
Generally in terms of overall diameter... a smaller overall diameter will give you better acceleration with the exchange being a lower top-speed. Of course if you don't have decent traction then you're just gonna burn all of that acceleration away.
In terms of sidewall depth, the more sidewall you have, the better traction you're going to end up with. Dragsters use "wrinkle wall" tires that really exaggerate this but they're only good for drag racing because they're way too soft for road race.
Generally in Road Racing you'll use the smallest diameter wheel possible that will clear your brakes and the rest you make up with in tire sidewall.
Tires and Wheels can DRASTICALLY effect the performance and handling in your car, just depends on what's the purpose and what you're truly trying to obtain. As for how it effects power and torque... it doesn't... the energy generated is still there and cannot be destroyed merely transferred.
