Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Len vs Canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.0 USM Autofocus Lens. ?
I know they are both great lenses. There is a slight difference in price, but which do you recommend? Oh and I take mainly portraits and landscape shots. Thanks for any help. :]
I own the 85mm f/1.8 lens and it is a wonderful portrait lens. With the 1.6x crop factor on my Rebel XTi, it becomes effectively a 130mm lens. In a controlled environment where you have room to move, you'll be very pleased with the results.
At times, I have gotten into a situation where I just couldn't back away from my subject due to other constraints to compose the image the way that I wanted. To handle those situations, I also use a Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 EFS IS USM lens that cost a bit more, but gave me the added range that I was seeking with the performance of a constant f/2.8 aperture available at all focal lengths. I tend to use the 17-55mm lens for my landscape shots.
Personally, I wouldn't want a longer fixed lens for portrait use unless my shooting conditions were such that I was not that close to my subject.
Just sharing my experience - the f/1.8 is VERY nice on that lense, but it really gets sharp once you knock it down a couple of stops, f/4, especially from what I've seen.
Hope this helps some.
